Sukhothai Loi Krathong Festival

Origin :

The Loi Krathong Festival is held every November at Sukhothai Historical Park. The event follows the lifestyle of the Sukhothai people according to the stone inscriptions from the Sukhothai period. It has a unique atmosphere amidst the surroundings of a historical site.


Activities :
- Ceremony to pay homage to Phra Mae Ya and King Ramkhamhaeng the Great.
- Thai cultural and musical performances.
- Miss Nopphamat pageant and contests of lanterns, large and small Krathongs.
- Processions of Miss Nopphamat and Krathongs.
- Fireworks.
- Khan Tok dinner.
- "Sukhothai: The Capital" light and sound show that replicates events and the atmosphere when King Phra Ruang floated a Krathong. The finale includes fireworks and floating lanterns that light up the night sky.

Nearby Tourist Spots :
- Sukhothai National Park (Muang)
  comprises historical sites and artifacts that are invaluable to Thai history.
- Phra Mae Ya Shrine (Muang)
  was possibly built in the time of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great to pay homage to Nang Suang, his mother.
- Ramkhamhaeng National Park (Khiri Mat)
  is Thailand's first historical park.
