| Wax
Castle & Boat Racing Festival |
September
27 - October 1, 2001
Venue : Wat Phra That Choeng Chum, Sakon Nakhon Province.
To
celebrate the end of Buddhist Lent (Ok Phansa), residents of the
northeast (I-san) mould beeswax into miniature Buddhist temples
and shrines (wax castles) to gain merit, an act which ultimately
determines their future destiny during reincarnation. These crafted
models can be seen especially in Sakon Nakhon where an annual
festival is held with a grand wax castle procession, competitive
boat races as well as traditional northeastern cultural performances
among many other festivities.
