| The
Traditional Kite - Flying Contest of Satun Province |
February
9 - 11, 2001
Venue : Satun Provincial Airport
During the rice harvesting season in Satun Province which extends
from February to April, kite-flying is a popular past-time for
children and adults alike. This is the season when the north-east
winds known as the "kite breeze" blow thereby creating ideal conditions
for kite-flying.
The popular kites come in all shapes and sizes. Some are naturally-inspired
such as those made in the shape of creatures commonly seen around
the village. Given the vital role that the buffalo plays in the
prosperity of these rice-farming communities, the "waow kwai"
or the buffalo-shaped kite is the most common. Others are the
result of creative inspiration and are crafted on the spur of
the moment using whatever materials that are on-hand at the time.
The kite-flying contest of Satun is a traditional village sport
which has attracted the interest of the neighbouring countries
and is widely known. The contest is now held annually, every February,
in the provincial grounds of Satun.
